Weeks Act Centennial and its Author Recognized by the US Senate
The U.S. Senate approved a resolution authored by New Hampshire's Senators Judd Gregg and Jeanne Shaheen to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Weeks Act.  In addition to celebrating the law's centennial anniversary, the resolution recognizes the law's author, John Weeks, a Massachusetts Congressman born in Lancaster, New Hampshire.  It also recognizes that the acquisition of the first 7,000 acres of White Mountain National Forest was made possible using the authorities provided by the Weeks Act.  Lastly, the resolution acknowledges the work and cooperation of local conservation groups, businesses, industrialists, and the tourism industry to ensure passage of the original law.

Museum Volunteers Attend 2010 SAF Convention

Museum Volunteers Attend 2010 SAF Convention. Chief Tom Tidwell stopped by our display at the recent 2010 Society of American Foresters National Convention. The Museum was well represented. Among the volunteer board and leadership in attendence were: Steve Anderson, Keith Argow, Bjorn Dahl, Jim LaBau, Patty Limerick, John Sandor, Lynn Sprague, Dave Stack and Tom Thompson.

NMFSH Campaign Co-Chair Bob Model inducted into Wyoming Outdoor Hall of Fame.  Model was recognized as a champion of the importance of private lands in sustaining public wildlife resources and of the need to improve sportsmen/landowner relations. Read more

Fire Sciences Laboratory

Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory celebrates 50 years - September 18, 2010
The Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory is observing their 50th anniversary on September 18, 2010.  Events will be held throughout the Missoula Fire, Science & Technology Center. The NMFSH will host a display of historical fire research objects for the occasion. More information


FPL Centennial

2010 marks one century for the U.S. Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, WI. In June the celebration kicks of with the dedication and grand opening of the Centennial Research Facility. The multi-use laboratory is a combined research facility housing state-of-the-art equipment and laboratories for four major areas of inquiry: Wood Preservation, Durability, Engineering Mechanics, Composite Sciences.

Tom Thompson

NMFSH Board Member Receives Alumnus Award
Congratulations to Board Member Tom Thompson who will receive Colorado State University's Warner College of Natural Resources Honor Alumnus Award. Thompson spent 37 years with the US Forest Service, where he served on the Forest Service Legislative staff in Washington, DC. There he was responsible for all 155 national forests and 20 national grasslands. He also served as deputy regional forester for the Rocky Mountain region for 12 years. In addition to serving on the NMFSH board, he serves on the Leadership Council for the National Forest Foundation and is a past president of the Society of American Foresters.

Forest Service Photographer is Focus of New Documentary
A new documentary titled "The World of K.D. Swan, Early 20th Century Photographer and Conservationist" was produced by longtime Forest Service employee, Marcia Hogan. The 25-minute film explores the personal story and historical context of the Massachusetts-born photographer who helped change the way Americans view their national forests. Montana PBS will broadcast the documentary in early April. Upcoming MontanaPBS air dates

1910 Fire Commemoration Links
