2010 marks one century for the U.S. Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, WI. In June the celebration kicks of with the dedication and grand opening of the Centennial Research Facility. The multi-use laboratory is a combined research facility housing state-of-the-art equipment and laboratories for four major areas of inquiry: Wood Preservation, Durability, Engineering Mechanics, Composite Sciences.

NMFSH Board Member Receives Alumnus Award
Congratulations to Board Member Tom Thompson who will receive Colorado State University's Warner College of Natural Resources Honor Alumnus Award. Thompson spent 37 years with the US Forest Service, where he served on the Forest Service Legislative staff in Washington, DC. There he was responsible for all 155 national forests and 20 national grasslands. He also served as deputy regional forester for the Rocky Mountain region for 12 years. In addition to serving on the NMFSH board, he serves on the Leadership Council for the National Forest Foundation and is a past president of the Society of American Foresters.

Forest Service Photographer is Focus of New Documentary
A new documentary titled "The World of K.D. Swan, Early 20th Century Photographer and Conservationist" was produced by longtime Forest Service employee, Marcia Hogan. The 25-minute film explores the personal story and historical context of the Massachusetts-born photographer who helped change the way Americans view their national forests. Montana PBS will broadcast the documentary in early April. Upcoming MontanaPBS air dates

1910 Fire Commemoration Links
In just two days in August 1910 towns were destroyed and over three million acres of forests burned in northern Idaho and western Montana. It was a defining event for the Forest Service and fire management. The links below provide information on commemorative events and exhibits in the region.

New Forest Service History Book Released
A new book, "U.S. Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest" by retired USFS National Historian Jerry Williams, details the important developments and programs that originated in that region. Published by Oregon State University Press, the book can be purchased through http://oldsmokeys.org/.
